A natural history museum in Upstate New York has commissioned a hybrid heating system using biomass and solar technology.

The Wild Center in Tupper Lake has installed a new wood pellet boiler that uses gasification technology to produce heat from locally sourced renewable wood fuel.

The system will be supplemented by a solar hot water system.

Supported by $350,000 from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the system replaces a propane boiler system to provide year-round heat and hot water.

Stephanie Ratcliffe, executive director of The Wild Center, said: “The opportunity to have such an installation at The Wild Center, where we can demonstrate and explain the technology to visitors, was something we could not pass up. We could not have achieved such a significant project with the support and commitment of NYSERDA.”
