Biomass benefits bountiful

RUSSELL — On a cold January morning, a group of fourth-graders bundled up, trekked outside and learned how giant piles of wood chips are being used to keep their school warm all winter.

The new $2 million biomass facility at Edwards-Knox Central School District is providing an on-site chance to teach students about alternative energy and renewable sources.

It’s also saving taxpayers in the small, rural district loads of money previously spent on fuel expenses.

“We don’t have to go anywhere to see all the things we’re talking about in class,” fourth-grade teacher Denise R. Koser said. “We’re studying energy, and this is perfect timing.”
